“Forensic odontology is a branch of forensic medicine and, in the interests of justice, deals with the proper examination, handling and presentation of dental evidence in a court of law.” (British Association for Forensic Odontology - BAFO)
I am a general dentist with a BSc in human anatomy and cell biology. I have also completed postgraduate training in forensic dentistry. For my masters project I had to conduct research into a chosen area. My field of choice was dental identifications and communication between dental professionals , police officers and forensic odontologists.
I wanted to help improve communications between the different professions during dental identifications. Therefore, with the help of my supervisor Dr Scheila Manica we created a Dental Record Checklist to raise awareness of different forms of antemortem data that would be helpful during dental identifications. This could be used by police officers when trying to retrieve dental records or for general practices to understand what they can provide.
The checklist is available to download in PDF format at the bottom of the page and in many different languages. If your chosen language is missing please contact us and we will be happy to translate it for you.
